It's been a big week for ASD in Canada, the 2018 report from the National Autism Spectrum Disorder Surveillance System (NASS) was released - a first reporting of national data and information to improve our understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Canada.  The findings of the 2015 NASS report focuses on those aged 5–17 years, from six provinces and one territory: Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, British Columbia and the Yukon.

Key findings:

Among children and youth 5–17 years old, the combined prevalence of ASD for the year 2015 is 1 in 66 (15.2 per 1,000).

Males were diagnosed with ASD four times more frequently than females. NASS found that 1 in 42 males and 1 in 165 females aged 5–17 years old were diagnosed with ASD.

Among those diagnosed by 17 years of age, 56% had received their diagnosis by 6 years of age; 72% had been diagnosed by 8 years of age; and less than 10% were diagnosed after 12 years of age.

The 2015 overall prevalence of ASD in Nova Scotia was 1 in every 68 (of 5–17 year olds).

Good Changes This in 2017!

Posted on September 28, 2017 at 8:30 PM Comments comments (1476)

This April 2017 instead of hosting our third annual IDEAS for Autism Event, we decided to partner with Autism Nova Scotia to make information gathering and connecting with professionals more accessible and easier for families. Rather than having separate events during Light it Up Blue Day, IDEAS for Autism joined forces with Autism Nova Scotia and were provided the opportunity to attend Autism Nova Scotia events throughout the month of April in order to promote the IDEAS website and provide information to families - all in one location.

As IDEAS begins to change the way information is provided to families, and progress with our partnerships with local ASD organizations, we hope that families find it more accesible and easier to navigate the many available resources that the HRM community has.

If you have any questions on IDEAS for Autism changes, or if you would like to become involved in future events, please contact [email protected]

Looking forward to an exciting 2018!

Has your toddler or preschooler been recently diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)? Are you waiting for early intensive behavioural intervention?

Caitlin Neily, registered psychologist, at Erica Baker Psychological Services is now offering Brief Pivotal Response Training (PRT) for families.

PRT is an evidence-based treatment designed to help children with ASD learn to socially-communicate and reduce challenging behaviours.

The service offers a week-long introduction to PRT in your child’s home, preschool, and/or community – teaching caregivers play and routine-based strategies to motivate your child to communicate in the context of daily activities.
